Poland: Warsaw celebrates 60th anniversary of Stalin's gift to Poland

Palac Kultury i Nauki (Palace of Culture and Science) in Warsaw, turned its windows into a colourful game of Tetris to celebrate its 60 year anniversary on Thursday, with locals able to join in the game using the Palace's walls as a big screen. The building has been the centre of attention more than once in the past as it was a gift from the late Soviet leader Joseph Stalin to Poland in 1955 with many city officials calling for the building to be torn down in a symbolic gesture after Poland shed its communist past in 1989, while others believe the building to be a part of Poland's national history that should be preserved. Calls to destroy or reconstruct the building's shape were largely silenced ten years ago when the more than half-century old Palace of Culture and Science was declared a historical building. Palac Kultury i Nauki is the tallest building in Poland and the eighth tallest building in the EU standing at 231 meters (757 ft).
