A huge fire broke out on a Palflot-2 Russian oil tanker in the Caspian Sea, near the territorial waters of Turkmenistan, on Saturday. One crew member, reportedly a Kazakhstani man who worked as the ship's mechanic, died during the incident.
The remaining ten crew members were evacuated onto a nearby vessel belonging to the same company as the Palflot-2 as personnel from Azerbaijan's Emergency Ministry attempted to bring the blaze under control.
The Palflot-2 tanker caught fire around 110 kilometres (68.4 miles) from the nearest shoreline and roughly 800 kilometres (497 miles) from Russia's nearest port in the city of Astrakhan.
According to the Russian Emergency Ministry, the tanker was not transporting any oil at the time of the fire. The cause of the blaze remains unclear at this stage.
