Germany called in the Russian ambassador in Berlin on Thursday, to discuss possible sanctions against Moscow over a 2015 hacking attack on the German parliament.
German prosecutors issued an arrest warrant for Russian citizen Dmitry Badin on May 5, accusing him of spionage activities against the lower house of parliament in 2015 in behalf of Russia's GRU intelligence agency.
As a result of the warrant, Berlin will seek to use the EU cyber sanctions regime against those accused of attacking the German parliament, including Badin, according to reports citing the German Foreign Ministry.
In 2016, a public allegation was filed by the German domestic intelligence agency accusing a Russian hacker group thought to be working for the Russian government of carrying out a hacking attack that breached email inboxes belonging to the office of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, reportedly containing emails from 2012-2015.
The Russian embassy said in a statement issued earlier on Wednesday that German officials so far had not presented facts to support such accusations against Moscow.
