California wildfires have razed the town of Paradise to the ground, forcing residents to take refuge in shelters, footage from Sunday showed.
"The trees were going off like matchsticks," recounted one local who managed to escape the fire.
The search for bodies continues in Paradise, where 29 people are known to have died.
At least 31 people have died state-wide thus far with as many as 228 people still missing.
A fire department officer said as many as 15,000 townsfolk were evacuated with many seeking shelter in nearby Oroville, where six shelters are currently being operated.
Some like local zookeeper Jim Minthol chose to stay and keep watch over his animal.
"The police, the highway patrol, have got this shut down tighter than the Mexican border," he told journalists.
