Protests turned violent in Hong Kong on Sunday, as thousands hit the streets to oppose the now-suspended extradition bill and demand the departure of Chief Executive Carrie Lam.
Police could be seen deploying tear gas against protesters, some of whom required medical assistance. Many took out umbrellas in an attempt to shield themselves from the tear gas.
After joining a police-approved route, thousands of protesters passed the official end point of the demonstration and headed towards the financial district, according to media reports.
Police also used rubber bullets against the protesters, according to media reports.
The extradition bill has been suspended indefinitely, but protesters are now demanding its full withdrawal and the resignation of Carrie Lam. The legislation would allow Hong Kong citizens to be extradited to mainland China to face trial.
