USA: Scuffles in Cleveland follow officer's acquittal over unarmed African-American deaths

Protesters scuffled with police in Cleveland, Saturday as demonstrations erupted against the acquittal of a police officer in the killing of two unarmed African-Americans. The court's decision led to protests in Cleveland, where police clashed with protesters and made a number of arrests. Officer Michael Brelo was found not guilty of voluntary manslaughter, two years after the deaths of Timothy Russell and Malissa Williams following a car chase. The couple died after Brilo stood on their car bonnet and shot the unarmed black motorists 15 times in 7.4 seconds. Police officers had peppered the car with over 100 bullets just moments before. A Cuyahoga County judge ruled that Brelo had not committed voluntary manslaughter or felonious assault since he had believed that he was in danger, and because it could not be said beyond reasonable doubt that Brelo had fired the fatal shots due to the barrage of bullets fired by various officers. Cleveland was rocked last November by the shooting of 12-year-old Tamir Rice. The unarmed boy was waving a toy gun, when police officers shot him from close range. The officers involved in the shooting have so far faced no charges.
