Bulgaria Football Union (BFU) former president Borislav Mihaylov denied Bulgaria is a racist country, while speaking at a press conference in Sofia on Friday, days after his resignation prompted by the racist abuse directed at England players at Monday's Euro 2020 qualifier against England.
Mihaylov said he stepped down in the hope of bringing down the pressure generated in the past week, but said that the scenes of racism witnessed at Sofia's Vasil Levski National Stadium were seen more often in other countries.
Monday's match, which England won 6-0, was halted twice due to the racist behaviour coming from sections of the Bulgarian fans. The episode also prompted the intervention of Bulgaria Prime Minister Boyko Borissov, who called on Mihaylov to quit his post.
