Israel's Blue and White alliance leader Benny Gantz celebrated his party achieving the most seats in the Israeli elections and said that "the people chose unity, the people want for Israel to be before everything" and did not accept the current Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's offer to form a Netanyahu-led unity government in Tel Aviv on Thursday.
"In order to form a unity government, you can't approach it with political blocs and spins, but you come with honesty, statehood and seriousness. I intend to act accordingly as I said before and intend to act according to the note I placed between the stones of the Western Wall. May peace be upon us and all the people of Israel, and make peace within us, thank you very much," said the former military chief.
Netanyahu called on his main rival Benny Gantz to form a unity cabinet, which would allow the current Prime Minister to stay in power, after Israel's second general election in less than a year failed to produce a clear winner. The two politicians were seen shaking hands at the ceremony.
The latest results show that Benny Gantz's Blue and White party is leading by two seats with 33 out of 120 seats in the Knesset at 97 percent of the vote counted. Netanyahu's coalition with ultra-Orthodox as well as right wing parties currently holds 55 seats while the center-left bloc stands at 57.
