French President Emmanuel Macron promised to engage in a "demanding dialogue" with Russia at a G7 press conference in Taormina, Saturday, ahead of his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Macron said he didn’t consider the current state of negotiations on the Syrian conflict “a victory" for G7 countries because none of the member states were central players in the talks. “None of us has had the ability to be at the table. There was Russia, Iran and Turkey. It is a defeat,” said the French leader.
“We must talk with Russia to change the frame of the exit of the military crisis in Syria, and to build in a much more collective manner, a political solution,” he added.
Macron will meet with Putin in Versailles on Monday.
