New Zealand: Greenpeace scale Parliament House in climate change action
6
25.06.2015
Four Greenpeace protesters evaded security and scaled the New Zealand Parliament House, in Wellington, Thursday. The activists unfurled a large banner over the buildings entrance depicting the country's Prime Minister John Key, and reading "cut pollution, create jobs? Yeah, nah." The four protesters also hauled up eight solar panels to remonstrate against what they say is the government's inaction over promoting renewable energy and tackling climate change. Police did not intervene in the protest, instead issuing the group with trespass notices and waiting for them to come down on their own accord. Whilst atop the building the activists used social media to promote their action; taking a question and answer session on the website Reddit, and using Twitter to post pictures of their protest throughout the day. Around 77 percent of New Zealand's electricity comes from renewable energy sources, including geothermal and hydroelectric power.
