Germany's first ever job fair held exclusively for refugees kicked off in Berlin’s Estrel Hotel on Monday, with thousands attending and more than 200 exhibitors from Berlin offering job opportunities.
Owner of the Estrel Hotel, Ekkehard Streletzki, initiated the job fair, since he had decided to "invite refugees instead of holding an inauguration ceremony” for the hotel's new convention centre. The 76-year-old businessman added that he thinks refugees should be paid appropriately. “Nobody will work for only one euro anymore, not even a refugee,” Streletzki said.
Among the 4,000 or so attendees was Fadi Salem, a teacher from Syria, who said the expectations and requirements of employers in Germany are on the difficult side. His compatriot Adam Zhakfa agreed saying “you come from war. It takes time to relax, to get used to life here. It’s not easy but, yes, with time, I can do that.”
The fair was organized by Estrel Berlin in cooperation with the City of Berlin, Germany’s Job Centre (Bundesagentur fur Albeit) and others.
