Dozens of peace campaigners participated in a peace walk before floating lanterns on the Thames in London, Sunday, commemorating those who lost their lives during the US atomic bombing of Nagasaki which took place 70 years ago. Led by Buddhist monks, activists from the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND), the Network for Peace group and other anti-nuclear organisations marched from Westminster Cathedral to the Battersea Park's Peace Pagoda. In front of the Pagoda they participated in a Buddhist service before releasing dozens of floating lanterns straight into the Thames. At least 40,000 people were killed in Nagasaki on August 9, 1945 and another 60,000 in Hiroshima on August 6 when the United States dropped atomic bombs on both Japanese cities. Aside from the victims who died immediately in the attacks, tens of thousands of people suffered long-term effects as a result of the nuclear explosions, including those who died from exposure in the following months. The twin bombings were the first and last time nuclear weapons were used in a war.
