Iraq: Army use tear gas as protesters near Baghdad's Green Zone

27.05.2016
Thousands of anti-government protesters were tear gassed and several sustained injuries after the Iraqi army intervened as they came close to breaching Baghdad's heavily guarded Green Zone area on Friday.
Protesters managed to break through security at Tahrir Square and then carried on towards the parliament buildings before being forced back by the deployment of tear gas.
The incident follows on from several attempts by anti-government protesters to break through the fortified zone in the past two months. Demonstrators are calling for the government to continue with reforms and the assembling of a new technocratic cabinet as anger grows over alleged corruption within the current political setup.
