Hundreds of 'Democracy Spring' protesters were arrested at sit-in in front of the US State Capitol in Washington DC on Monday, allegedly setting a new high on the number of arrested people during a single rally at the location. Some reports indicate that more than 300 demonstrators were detained by police.
As seen on footage emerging from the site of the sit-in, the protesters did not resist arrest while the police officers lined them up and tied their hands behind their backs before transporting them away from the US Capitol in police coaches. At least ten coaches were required to remove those who had been arrested, according to reports.
The week-long programme of civil disobedience, rallies and marches, expected to become "the largest incident of civil disobedience in this country this millennium," according to organisers kicked off on Sunday with the arrival of dozens of Democracy Spring activists at the Union Station in Washington DC by foot from Philadelphia. The activists set out on a 140 miles (225 km) march starting from Philadelphia on April 2.
Members of Democracy Spring have identified at least four pending bills related to the regulation of financial institutions practices, and want Congress to take action to approve them. Avaaz, 99 Rise and the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), who have been actively endorsing recent anti-Trump protests, are some of the organisations and protest groups taking part in the event.
