Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and his Austrian counterpart Sebastian Kurz discussed the issues of tackling human trafficking and illegal migration during Sisi's official visit in Vienna on Monday.
Sisi stressed that stability in Egypt's neighbouring countries is vital for curbing migration.
He also mentioned his country’s efforts towards assisting refugees.
"In fact, in Egypt we have those 5 million we are talking about, and 11.000 who arrived in 2018, and they are still there because we did not allow them to leave to Europe, not even one boat has left," the Egyptian President said.
Kurz thanked his counterpart for his country’s cooperation in the fight against illegal migration, saying: "the central Mediterranean route is now de facto closed. We have had no more arrivals in Italy in the past few weeks."
"That doesn’t just mean that we're not just increasingly managing to establish order within Europe. Rather, it also means that, through this, the business practices of the smugglers will be destroyed and that, most importantly, the deaths, the drownings, in the Mediterranean will be stopped," stressed Kurz.
