About 1,500 Romanian troops and 100 US soldiers participated in a forced water-crossing in South-Eastern Romania, at the border of Ialomita and Constanta counties, Sunday, as part of NATO's Saber Guardian 2017 multinational exercise.
US Ambassador to Romania Hans Klemm witnessed the drills, along with commander of the US Army in Europe Lieutenant General Benjamin Hodges.
"The Black Sea is the border between Romania and the Russian Federation, and, of course, with Russia's illegal annexation of Crimea, Russia has moved that area further to the west," Hodges said, adding that has been "impressed with the work [the troops] have done to be up to protect [the Danube]."
Klemm concurred that "with some support from the United States Army, what we just saw today was a tremendous display of capability by the Romanian Army and Navy."
The Saber Guardian exercise is held annually in Romania, Bulgaria and Ukraine as part of the US European Command's Joint Exercise Programme. It is intended to improve joint operation capabilities between the participating nations.
