Violence broke out during a demonstration in the Turkish city of Diyarbakir, Wednesday, as scores of protesters rallied to protest against the arrest of the city's two joint mayors for alleged links to the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).
Turkish police forces used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the protesters. According to local sources, more than two dozen people were arrested during the demonstration.
Gultan Kisanak, who became Diyarbakir's first female mayor in 2014, and Firat Anli, her co-mayor, were arrested on Tuesday.
According to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the removal of elected officials accused of links to the PKK, is part of Ankara's battle against the armed group. Kisanak is a prominent Kurdish political figure. The EU described the arrests as "very worrying."
