Russian President Vladimir Putin was briefed about the critical housing problems in Sevastopol by the governor of the city, Sergei Menyailo, in Moscow on Wednesday. According to the Governor, "there are a total of 112 buildings under the 'emergency' status" due to the critical state of disrepair that parts of the city are in.
The governor said the "the first stage of the resettlement program is [to transfer people from 'emergency' buildings to] 238 flats, which he vowed to "complete before September 1."
Menyailo reported that by next year residents will be rehoused to "about 600 flats because objectively we are now buying these flats in the fund, which is in Sevastopol." He added that the issue is now being discussed with the Russian Government and Ministry of Construction.
Most of the buildings, which were built in the 1950s and 1960s and erected on the unstable foundations, have recently fallen into disrepair and now pose a threat to local residents.
The city of Sevastopol and the Crimean peninsula joined Russia following the referendum on March 16, 2014.
