Protesters marched on the Argentinian presidential residence of Casa Rosada in Buenos Aires, Thursday, demanding the resignation of recently elected president Mauricio Macri over his involvement in the Panama Papers scandal.
Demonstrators banged on the building's gates, calling out Macri for his alleged involvement in corruption, with several protesters referring to the head of state as a 'thief'.
Macri's name was mentioned several times in what have now become known as the 'Panama Papers,' leaked data that exposes alleged widespread international corruption related to offshore banking ventures and tax evasion.
The data provided in the leak centres around the activities of Mossack Fonseca over a 40 year period from the 1970s until spring 2016. There is believed to be an estimated 11.5 million documents in the Panama Papers, making it the largest leak of its kind. The information provided in the leak purportedly exposes the offshore holdings of 12 current and former world leaders including Macri, as well as unveiling data on the financial activities of 128 other politicians and public officials from a number of countries.
Between 2007 and 2008, Macri failed to disclose his relationship to offshore trading company Fleg Trading Inc, of which he was allegedly vice-president, in his asset declarations during his position as Mayor of Buenos Aires. The Bahamas-based company was managed by Mossack Fonseca, at the centre company in the Panana Papers scandal. Despite being closely connected to several offshore trading companies in the papers, Macri has denied any wrongdoing. He will sit before a court later on Friday in a bid to prove his innocence.
