Thousands of Jammat-e-Islam protesters took to the streets of the Pakistani city of Rawalpindi on Friday to protest against measures demanded by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as part of a new bailout deal, and to demand the implementation of an Islamic system of government in the country.
Jammat-e-Islam President Sirajul Haq was present at the protest, which saw demonstrators holding a banner reading "IMF slavery unacceptable, people's march against price hike, unemployment and rise in taxes."
On July 3, the IMF consented to a $6 billion (€5.3 billion) bailout package to help "return sustainable growth" to Pakistan's economy. The deal - the 13th IMF bailout for Pakistan - is due to span 39 months, with the IMF expected to review Islamabad's progress on a quarterly basis.
