Spanish jurist Baltasar Garzon, head of Julian Assange's legal team, stated that the US has been secretly investigating the co-founder of Wikileaks, as well as its publication, in an exclusive interview with RT Spanish, in Madrid, on Saturday.
Garzon said, "Since 2010 the US has been conducting a secret investigation against Julian Assange and Wikileaks because of the publication of classified materials, because of his fight for freedom of speech and information."
Garzon continued, "Julian Assange is the founder of Wikileaks, and he cannot be pursued for this reason," before adding, "Those who condemn Wikileaks should be investigated and pursued."
On Friday, Swedish prosecutors announced their decision to drop the investigation over his rape allegations earlier and revoked the arrest warrant.
However, Director of Public Prosecution Marianne Ny said the investigation could be resumed "if Julian Assange were to return to Sweden before the statute of limitations on this case expires in August 2020."
Assange has been residing in the Ecuadorian embassy in London since 2012, after taking refuge in the building in order to avoid extradition to Sweden.
