SOT, Oleg Kononenko, cosmonaut (Russian): “Fifty experiments and more than 300 scientific investigations were conducted. The experiment with 3D bioprinter is the unique one, Russia has gained the world authority in this sphere after carrying out this experiment in orbit. The experiment was finished successfully. We grew human cells and, if I am not mistaken, of rat or bat. The experiment was completed successfully in three or four of six test tubes that were brought in orbit from the Earth”.

SOT, David Saint-Jacques, Canadian astronaut (Russian): “Medical experiments are a priority for the Canadian Space Agency. For us it is important to conduct such experiments on board, that can be later used on the Earth. Telemedicine is very important for me, as I used to work as a doctor in the north of Canadian a long time ago, and used telemedicine. And I understand that all technologies we develop in space can be used on the Earth. We worked with special clothes that measure vital signs like pulse, temperature, pressure. We also worked on a prototype of a mini-lab for blood analysis.”

SOT, Oleg Kononenko, Cosmaunaut and commander (Russian): “The spacesuit Orlan of a new type is on board ISS. This is the logical development of previous types of spacesuit. The main difference from Orlan MK is that now we have an automatic temperature control system. So we do not need to pay attention to the heart beating or sweating. The system fixes it automatically. No claims came from cosmonauts. The system is working well. And I do not pay attention to the conditions in the space suit while working in the outer space.”

SOT, Oleg Kononenko, Cosmaunaut and commander (Russian): “Guns used to be in the list of emergency ration. When I carried out my first flight we had such a gun. The landing module can land at any place on Earth, the landing can be expected or unexpected. It is clear that with the development of technical equipment, phones and satellites, our location can be found very fast. But it does not mean that we can be rescued fast. We need to say where are we are somehow, we need to use rescue flares. We can appear in places which are difficult to travel through so we need a special knife to build a cover position and probably we will need a gun, as the wild animals still exist on Earth.”

International Space Station (ISS) Expedition 59 crew, Oleg Kononenko of Roscosmos, Anne McClain of NASA, and David Saint-Jacques of the Canadian Space Agency held a press conference in Star City on Tuesday, reviewing their 204-day mission aboard the ISS.
The crew’s commander Kononenko said that 50 experiments and 300 scientific investigations were carried out during the spaceflight.
The cosmonaut also stated he supports the idea of returning weapons into the expedition’s equipment upon returning to Earth, as it would allow the crew to defend themselves from wild animals.
Canada’s Saint-Jacques on his part said that medical experiments were the priority for the Canadian Space Agency.
The trio spent 204 days in space and returned to Earth on June 25.
