French President Francois Hollande said that the killing of a police officer and his police worker wife in Magnanville was "incontestably a terrorist act" during a press conference in Paris, Tuesday.
The plain-clothes police officer, Jean-Baptiste, was reportedly stabbed outside his home in Magnanville some 35 miles (55 km) west of the French capital, with the policeman's wife, Jessica, who also works for the same police district, and their 3-year-old child reportedly taken hostage.
After police arrived on the scene, negotiations began with the suspect, but quickly broke down, with the police storming and killing the assailant, who was reportedly a neighbour of the family. According to law enforcement, the wife was found dead inside the house, but police officials stated that they were able to save the son.
The assailant has been named as 25-year-old Larossi Abballa and was reportedly previously sentenced for three and a half years on a suspended sentence for 'terrorist' related offenses.
