Argentina: Thousands of torch-wielding protesters decry Marci's cuts

Thousands of torch-bearing Argentinians took to the streets of Buenos Aires to protest against labour reforms, wage stagnation, and cuts to the public sector, following the election of Argentinian President Mauricio Macri's new government, Tuesday.
The demonstrators marched through the city and later gathered at Plaza de Mayo, blocking downtown traffic. Hundreds of heavily armoured police were deployed to the protest site.
Macri's pro-business reforms have sparked a wave of protests throughout the country. Demonstrations organised by Argentina's biggest trade unions have been accompanied by student protests. The protesters have been calling for action against skyrocketing consumer prices, shrinking subsidies, job and education cuts as well as one of the world's highest inflation rates.
Unions estimate that over 100,000 workers are reported to have lost their jobs since Macri took office in December 2015, among them thousands of state workers. Macri justifies his business-friendly policies with the need to attract foreign investment and pull Argentina's stagnating economy out of recession.
