Footage released by Chester Zoo on Tuesday, shows four baby Humboldt penguins Wotsit, Quaver, Frazzle and Cheeto, the first to be born at the facility. The zoo’s staff decided to name chicks after one of the zoo keeper’s favourite potato snacks.
The chicks, which were born over Sunday evening and into Monday morning, weigh around 75 grammes (0.165 lbs) each. If the chicks are reared successfully, they are expected to reach 56–70 cm (22–28 in) in height and weigh between 3.6-5.9 kg (8-13 lbs).
The Humboldt penguin lives mainly on the coastal areas of Peru and Chile. The species is currently under threat from changes to the climate, over-fishing and ocean acidification. The current population is estimated to be between 3,300 and 12,000. In 2010 the penguin was granted protection under the US Endangered Species Act.
