The heads of state the G7 nations - Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and the US - sat down for a business breakfast at the Shima Kanko Hotel in Kashiko Island, alongside EU Commission President Jean Claude Juncker and EU Council President Donald Tusk, as the 42nd G7 summit kicked off in Japan on Thursday.
Growing uncertainty in the global economy is expected to top the agenda at the 'Group of Seven' summit. As well as this, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced prior to the summit that he hopes to discuss the situation in the Asia-Pacific region with the other G7 members.
During his visit to Japan, Obama is set to visit Hiroshima. He will be the first serving US president to visit the city, on which US forces dropped an atomic bomb, on August 6, 1945.
