Russian divers performed the world's deepest dive under ice in the White Sea, Karelia region, Saturday, according to Bojana Ostoyich of the World Underwater Federation. The footage emerged on Sunday, showing the process of the dive.
Divers Maxim Astakhov and Alexander Gubin reached a depth of 102m (334.6ft) using new Russian diving which they were testing during the experiment. The operation was overseen by a team of professionals including diving and medical experts who observed the events from the surface ice.
They spent 80 minutes in the sea, with the water at a temperature of less than minus 1.5 degrees Celsius (29.3 degrees Fahrenheit).
The event is a part of an expedition called '13 Seas of Russia', where 10 researchers study Russian seas, using Russian diving equipment. The first stage was the expedition to Barents Sea, where scuba divers conducted the deepest dive at the Pole of Cold - it was 111 m (364.2ft). As of Saturday, the divers have set what are believed to be three new world records: the first and the deepest dive at the Pole of Cold, the deepest dive off the coast of Antarctica as well as Saturday's episdoe in the White Sea.
