13.01.2019
Italian former militant Cesare Battisti was arrested in the central Bolivian city of Santa Cruz on Sunday.
Surveillance footage shows Battisti prior to being arrested in Bolivia.
Battisti, who was a member of Italian far-left radical group Armed Proletarians for Communism, was on the run since December 2018 after Brazilian judges ordered his arrest and the country’s outgoing president, Michel Temer, ordered his extradition. Battisti had spent years living in Brazil as a refugee.
Battisti was sentenced to life prison in his native Italy for four murders committed in the 1970s, which he firmly denies committing. He has been sought by Italian authorities since he escaped from prison in 1981.
Filipe G. Martins, a senior aide to Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, said Battisti will soon be brought to Brazil and then on to Italy to face justice. Bolsonaro vowed to immediately deport Battisti to Italy during his presidential campaign.
