Around 280 men took part in a traditional swimming ritual in the freezing cold waters of the Danube river in Belgrade, Tuesday, for the Orthodox holiday of Epiphany.
With water temperatures close to freezing and outside temperatures below zero, the participants of the Epiphany swim raced to reach the crucifix that was thrown into the water by Serbian Patriarch Irinej, who also blessed the swimmers before the race.
Some swimmers appeared in T-shirts featuring the portrait of Russian President Vladimir Putin and chanted "For Serbia, For Russia," before diving into the cold water. The winner of the race was Dejan Dimitrijevic, who won the race for the fourth time.
The Orthodox Epiphany holiday is one of the main holidays for Orthodox Christians and marks the baptism of Jesus Christ into Christianity.
