UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson reaffirmed his positive outlook on the election of Donald Trump as US president, in Brussels on Monday, ahead of a summit with his European counterparts.
Johnson stated, "I think there is a lot to be positive about and it is very important not to pre-judge the president-elect or his administration, it is only a few days since the election has taken place. I think we all need to wait and see what they come up with. But I think we should regard it as a moment of opportunity." He added, "I think that it could be a good thing for Britain, but it could also be a good thing for Europe, I think that's what we need to focus on today."
On the topic of European military spending and a possible joint EU defence force, he also stressed that, "I personally think it is a good thing if other European countries shoulder more of their responsibilities and spend a bit more on defence. I wouldn't be against that, it is important when you are setting up these EU structures, that they should be complimentary with NATO; you shouldn't undermine the fundamental security structure that has looked after us for the last 70 years."
Also on the agenda for the summit are recent developments in Turkey, specifically regarding the recent arrest of 11 MPs. High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini stressed, "we have already reacted united to the latest developments in Turkey especially following the arrest of the leaders of CHP and other measures that were taking place in the last couple of weeks, expressing in the name of the 28 member states our very serious concern about developments in the country."
