Thousands of Catholic faithful celebrated the Vatican's canonisation of the nation's first Brazilian born female saint Sister Dulce Lopes Pontes at a mass ceremony in Salvador's Fonte Nova Arena on Sunday.
Devotees braved the hot and humid weather to show their appreciation for the so-called "mother of the poor".
Reflecting the views of many, Wellica Barbose de Assis said Dulce was a saint before the Vatican recognised her two miracles - the hurdle to becoming a new saint.
"I asked sister Dulce for help when my son was born. My faithful saint. Before she was considered by the church to be a saint, she already made miracles in my life," she said.
Sister Dulce Lopes Pontes was born in 1914 in Salvador and lived to the age of 77. During her lifetime she devoted herself to helping the city's poor and in 1988 she was nominated by for the Nobel Peace Prize. She was officially canonised by the Vatican on October 13.
