What is possibly a one-off Soviet-era edition of the Demons by the famous Russian writer Fyodor Dostoyevsky was auctioned-off in Moscow on Thursday, selling for a massive 3,400,000 roubles ($43,991).
The sale would have appealed only to the most ardent Dostoyevsky fan or book collector and both would have needed deep pockets with a starting price was set at 2.5 million roubles ($33,864). The book was valued so highly because after it was prepared for publication in 1935 by the Soviet Union’s Academia publishing house, either the print run was stopped after one edition or the full run was finished but then pulped, all save for this once copy.
Deputy General Director of the Litfond Auction House Lesya Mikheeva explained that “almost all have heard about (the book), but few people have had it in their hands. Even the oldest Russian and Moscow booksellers cannot boast of owning this book”.
