Pet-owners and their furry friends flocked to the Church of San Anton in central Madrid on Thursday, to receive the traditional blessing on the day of Saint Anthony, the Patron Saint of Animals.
Dogs, cats, rabbits and also songbirds lined up in front of the church and waited for the priests, who sprinkled holy water on them and performed a special prayer. Some parishioners brought their pets' pictures and received their blessing over a smartphone screen.
"Blessings, blessings are always blessings from God, all of us want our children to be blessed and also, sometimes, we want our animals to be blessed", said Father Angel, head of NGO Messengers of Peace and priest in San Anton Church.
The church is open twenty four hours a day and is open to everyone, animals included, he added.
The pets' blessing is part of Saint Anthony's festival, which is celebrated in Madrid since the nineteenth century and in other parts of Spain.
