Gir National Park announced that their Asiatic lions gave birth to new cubs, Friday, in Gujarat state, with four lionesses giving birth to 11 cubs. The Asiatic lions are an endangered species, with less than 530 estimated to still be alive. Environmentalists have led legal charges against the north-western Indian state, raising concerns about the lions being kept in one location, with the national part on a flood plane where the animals are at risk of death. Gujarat has so far resisted relocating the lions. At least 10 lions died in floods early July. A further 40 were feared dead or missing, but were found on the banks of the Shetrunji river, reportedly roaming and hunting prey. Despite concerns, since 2010, there has been a increase in the population of the endangered animals by 27 percent.
