Iraqi Parliament Speaker Ahmed Abdullah al-Jubouri said that "an agreement will be reached soon" between Baghdad and Iraqi Kurdistan, speaking from Saint Petersburg, Monday.
Al-Jubouri elaborated that "the issue is developing," adding, "we hope that agreements that have been reached over the past two days will be implemented."
He then noted that a delay in negotiating process may occur in case ''any of negotiating parties do anything contrary to what has been agreed upon.''
"We support official military presence and the fact that they control some areas in terms of safety and stability, according to Commander-in-Chief's statements issued regarding the Iraqi Army," al-Jubouri stated.
Tensions between the Iraqi government and the autonomous Kurdish government have been brewing since Iraqi Kurds overwhelmingly voted for secession in a September 25 referendum that Baghdad rejected as illegal. According to the Kurdish Election Commission, more than 90% of those taking part voted in favour of seceding from Iraq.
