Switzerland: We are failing but 'everybody else is failing more than us' - Egeland

Secretary General of the Norwegian Refugee Council Jan Egeland spoke at a press conference alongside UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura in Geneva, Thursday, where they outlined their plan for Aleppo following Russia's announcement of an 11 hour ceasefire.
Egeland proclaimed the role of the UN to be increasingly consequential to discussions between warring parties: "I'm convinced that the United Nations is becoming more and more relevant in this frankly because we're failing but they are failing much more. Everybody else is failing more than us."
Mistura outlined plans for what he considered necessary for a permanent ceasefire: "stop bombing and fighting from both sides, second, the voluntary departure of al-Nusra fighters with their weapons." The UN Special Envoy went on to state that this plan had "not yet been accepted by al-Nusra."
Moscow announced on Tuesday that both Russian and Syrian air forces had halted airstrikes in the besieged city of Aleppo as parties plan for an eleven hour ceasefire on Thursday. Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu stated that the humanitarian pause was to allow civilians to leave Aleppo and for aid to be delivered to the city. Militant fighters in eastern Aleppo will also be allowed to leave the city with their arms via two corridors in a bid to de-escalate the fighting in the city.
