UK: Labour's Jeremy Corbyn rails against welfare cuts and foreign intervention

Labour leadership candidate Jeremy Corbyn railed against corporate greed, the current British Conservative government, and foreign intervention during his speech at ‘The policies Labour needs to win’ conference in Bloomsbury Central Baptist Church in London on Tuesday. Speaking alongside Labour MPs Diane Abbott and Clive Lewis, Corbyn called for the redevelopment of Britain’s welfare state, and a departure from 1980’s corporate culture and “the promotion of greed and war.” Focusing on the cuts to Britain’s welfare budget, the prime ministerial hopeful slammed the £12 billion (€16.9 billion) in cuts made by the conservatives to “the poorest people in the country." Corbyn also hit out at Britain’s policy of foreign intervention, under both Tory and Labour leadership, decrying “the way in which we as a country have been pouring arms” into the Middle East, and calling for a peace process. Corbyn has been gathering support in his attempt to become leader of the Labour party, after their comprehensive defeat earlier this year in the UK general election. The MP has been garnering the support of various trade unions and young people in his candidacy bid, many of which express sympathy with his anti-austerity message.
