The European Commission's First Vice-President Frans Timmermans and the European Commissioner for Migration and Home Affairs Dimitris Avramopoulos, along with French Prime Minister Manuel Valls and French Minister of Interior Bernard Cazeneuve gave a press conference, in Calais on Monday, after visiting the Eurotunnel. During his speech, Valls stated that, although the "right of asylum has to be preserved," illegal immigration "has to be fought against." Regarding the Schengen Agreement, the French prime minister added that it does not serve just "to abolish the internal borders," but to "reinforce the external borders" too. For his part, Frans Timmermans, stated that the actual situation of asylum seekers is "destined to last", and expressed his views about how the influx of migrants could "be increased rather than to decrease" in the ongoing crisis. As for Avramopoulos, he highlighted the role of Frontex operation in order to protect the European borders, and expressed the necessity of the "front-line countries to be helped." This press conference has come after the visit of the European authorities to the French region of Calais, where thousands of migrants have settled a camp during the last months while waiting for a chance to cross the English Channel into the United Kingdom.
