The far-right National Democratic Party of Germany (NPD) held a rally in the Germany town of Demmin, Sunday, to commemorate the defeat of Nazi Germany and the country's occupation, 71 years after the Red Army's victory over Nazi Germany in 1945.
The far right rally commemorated the Nazi loss and fall of the town, which was the site of a mass suicide on May 1, 1945, after claims of brutality and mass rape caused mass panic following the Red Army capture of the town from Nazi forces.
In what was the largest mass suicide ever recorded in Germany, hundreds of people hung themselves, cut their wrists and drowned themselves in local rivers in Demmin, with entire families committing mass suicide. Nazi officials and government forces fled the town before the arrival of the Red Army.
Germany is due to commemorate the 71st anniversary of Victory Day on Monday, May 9 at the Soviet War Memorial in Treptower Park where attendees are expected to lay wreaths in honour of those who perished in World War II.
