Around 10,000 supporters of the Serbian Radical Party gathered on Belgrade's Republic Square, Thursday, to mark the 17th anniversary of the bombing of Yugoslavia by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The protesters also gathered to show their opposition to the International Criminal Tribunal (ICC) verdict sentencing former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic to 40 years in prison for genocide and war crimes.
The demonstrators carried anti-NATO placards and Serbian and Russian flags during the rally. The leader of the Radical Party Vojislav Seselj, speaking during the protest, said Serbia "can never be friends with NATO, as long as it exists" describing NATO as a "criminal, aggressive, military alliance." Seselj called Serbia to "go back under the shelter of Mother Russia."
"Russia never bombed us, never left us stranded and it is again big and powerful," said the leader of the Radical Party.
Karadzic was found guilty of genocide for his role in the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, and of nine other charges. One genocide count was dropped.
