Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov held a joint press conference with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi following their meeting in Beijing, Friday. The upcoming visit to China by Russian President Vladimir Putin, bilateral relations, Iran's nuclear programme as well as territorial disputes in the South China Sea topped the agenda of the meeting.
Lavrov said that both Russia and China are actively preparing for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit and Putin's visit to that is scheduled for the end of June.
Both ministers also touched upon the Iran nuclear deal. "Russia and China are actively involved in the implementation of JCPOA [Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action] to ensure full compliance of the Iranian nuclear program to the peaceful nature and all agreements that have been achieved," Lavrov stressed.
Moreover, Lavrov stated that Russia's position in the territorial and jurisdictional disputes in the South China Sea remains unchanged. "These issues should not be internationalised - none of the external players should try to interfere in their solutions," said Lavrov.
On Thursday, Lavrov met with Chinese President Xi Jinping and took part in the fifth ministerial meeting of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia.
