China: 'We didn't expect this!' Dark matter probe detects suggestive signal

The team of researchers behind a Chinese particle observer believe they have detected a signal that may hint at the existence of dark matter, as was announced at a press briefing in Beijing on November 27.
The data collected from the Dark Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) may shed light on the annihilation or decay of particle dark matter.
In a presentation at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the project’s Chief Scientist Jin Chang declared that the data may herald a new scientific discovery. He said, “we have a compelling anomaly in the high-energy section, it goes up and then goes down again. We didn't expect this, and it cannot be explained by the existing knowledge of physics”.
The Dark Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) satellite is designed to detect particles such as electrons and photons with unprecedented energy resolution in order to identify possible dark matter signatures.
DAMPE is the product of an international research collaboration project between China, Italy and Switzerland. It was launched in 2015 and these are the first sets of results to be published.
Dark matter has never been directly observed and is therefore a hypothetical concept. However, its existence would account for a number of observations in physics.
