Colombia: Migrants cross Venezuelan border back to homeland

27.08.2015
Colombian soldiers assisted their fellow countrymen who have been deported from Venezuela to cross the Tachira River on Wednesday, following the implementation of new migration laws by Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. According to reports, over 1,500 undocumented Colombian migrants have already been expelled from Venezuela. Tension between the South American neighbours has been mounting in recent weeks. Maduro has accused Colombian migrants of being responsible for a recent crime wave, when three Venezuelan army officers were killed near the border by a paramilitary gang, with alleged links to former Colombian President Alvaro Uribe. The incident triggered Maduro to close Simon Bolivar Bridge, a usually busy border-crossing, and declared a state-of-emergency in the state of Tachira. Venezuela’s western border has been perpetually unstable for years, with violence linked to Colombia’s civil conflict and the presence of drug traffickers plaguing the region.
