A Sea-Watch rescue boat carrying 42 migrants rescued in the Mediterranean is heading for the port of Lampedusa, defying orders from Rome not to enter Italian waters, as seen in footage filmed from the island on Wednesday.
A boat from Italian law enforcement agency Guardia di Finanza could be seen tailing the rescue boat as it heads towards the port.
In an statement on Twitter from the German NGO, the captain of the boat wrote that she felt she had “no choice” but to bring the passengers, who have been on board the vessel for two weeks, to safety.
“I have decided to enter the port of Lampedusa. I know what I'm risking, but the 42 rescued are exhausted. I'm bringing them to safety now," the statement read.
Her decision comes just a day after the European Court of Human Rights ruled against an appeal from the charity organisation for Italy to allow them to disembark.
Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini has vowed not to let the migrants into Italy.
