US President Donald Trump said that he has an "absolute right" to order US companies not to do business with China, while speaking to reporters outside the White House in Washington DC, late on Friday, while departing for the G7 summit.
Trump made the statement in response to a question from a reporter after the President ordered US companies to start "looking for an alternative to China, including bringing your companies HOME" on Twitter.
The President said that it was the 1976 National Emergencies Act that gave him the authority to do so, although he incorrectly stated that the act was passed in 1977.
Trump also attacked US Federal Reserve chairman Jerome Powell saying he does not think "he is doing a good job at all" and if he were to resign, he "wouldn't stop him."
He added that France "unfairly" taxed American companies and said that if they continued to do so the US "will be taxing their wine like they've never seen before."
