The Calais prefect, Fabienne Buccio, held a press conference in Calais, Wednesday, where she blamed British 'No Borders' activists for clashes that took place in the 'Jungle' refugee camp on Friday, February 26.
"What happened on Friday? Our officers were violently assaulted by No Border activists," Buccio claimed, before adding: We saw people doing this going back a few weeks, who put our officers through unacceptable things. They were spat on, physically harassed, they had jackets with 'French Republic, Liberty, Equality, Fraternity' written on them that were written on and scratched with a marker. They were insulted, of course."
Buccio further alleged that activists had intimidated migrants who were boarding buses to leave the camp. "It is even worse that they intimidated the migrants at the moment the bus was set to depart, when we were not wearing protection. You know the buses that go to the CAOs [reception and orientation centers]. Usually everything goes well, but then they got on the bus, they made the migrants get off and they prevented the arriving migrants to get on the bus," Buccio said.
More than 3,700 refugees and migrants reside in the makeshift 'Jungle' camp. French authorities now plan to resettle as many as 1000 in reception centres throughout the country. Clashes have gripped the camp over the last week as authorities continue with their evacuation plans.
