Peru: Election candidates neck-and-neck in presidential runoff

06.06.2016
Peruvians rallied in the streets of Lima on Sunday, as the country gears up for the results of the final round of the presidential election.
Both candidates, the right-wing populist Keiko Fujimori and former World Bank economist Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, were filmed waiting for the results with the candidates running neck-and-neck according to exit polls.
Keiko Fujimori greeted her supporters outside the Melia Hotel and Pedro Pablo Kuczynski talked to the supporters at the headquarters of his party. Exit polls and partial counts have given Pedro Pablo Kuczynski a slight lead.
Runoff elections between Fujimori and Kuczynski were held as neither candidate received the necessary 50 percent to be elected outright in the previous round of the elections on April 10.
Fujimori's campaign has been fraught with corruption claims and strong opposition. The right-wing candidate is the daughter of former Peruvian president Alberto Fujimori, who is now imprisoned under charges of embezzlement and human rights violations.
Peru is one of 24 countries to have mandatory voting for nationals between 18 and 70 year old, with fines from $6 to $23 if they fail to submit a ballot.
