25.02.2016
Director General of the World Health Organization Margaret Chan spoke at a press conference in Rio de Janeiro, on Wednesday, during her official visit to Brazil to assess the situation regarding the country's Zika outbreak.
During the press conference, Chan offered a warning that the Zika outbreak might deteriorate further, "Things may get worse before they get better. And don't be surprised to see microcephaly in other parts of Brazil."
Chan praised the actions of Brazil's government, lauding them as "transparent" and "courageous" in their approach to the situation. However, she also stressed that the Brazilian government could not solve the crisis alone.
The Zika virus is a disease transmitted through the bite of an infected Aedes aegypti mosquito, which is also responsible for the transmission of chikungunya, dengue and yellow fever. Around 21 countries and territories in the Americas reported an increase of the local transmission of the Zika virus, since the beginning of 2016.
