A German archive in the town of Speyer found letters from Donald Trump’s grandfather requesting to be allowed to stay in Germany, Friday. Friedrich Trump emigrated from Germany to the USA in 1885 when he was 16 years old, and later tried to get German citizenship several times.
Local historian, Dr Franz Maier said, "Naturally, now that Donald Trump has been elected President of the United States, it was to be expected that his grandfather's history would become more famous as well, but the intensity of it all took us by surprise."
The first letter is directed to Prince Regent Luitpold in 1905 and it asks for his permission to become a German citizen. His appeal was rejected however, as he was already considered an American and so the Trump family left for New York. The second letter addressed to the Prince was sent a year and a half later from New York. It was again denied.
