The 'Cuban Five,' made up of Ramon Labanino, Gerardo Hernandez, Antonio Guerrero, Rene Gonzalez and Fernando Gonzalez, who were jailed for over 16 years in the United States for being suspected of spying for Havana, were honoured by Venezuelan President, Nicolas Maduro, in Caracas' National Mausoleum, Tuesday. The president presented each member of the group with a medal attached to a sash in the colours of the Venezuelan flag. The 'Cuban Five' came to Venezuela after being invited by Maduro. The group's members were given keys to the city as well as honorary medals in the city's Bolivar Square on Monday, and were greeted by hundreds of Cuban doctors, who had turned out in support. Later in the day they visited the tomb of former Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, who often lobbied for their release during their incarceration. The 'Cuban Five' were arrested by the FBI in 1998. Rene Gonzalez and Fernando Gonzalez were both released after they served their sentences, while the other 3 were sent to Cuba last December after Washington and Havana decided to re-establish diplomatic relations.
